The following is a very simple version of how to use phpMyAdmin to back up your WordPress database. For more detailed information see WordPress Backups and Backing Up Your Database. Once you have discovered how to access your site’s phpMyAdmin, follow these simple instructions.

Begin by clicking database in your phpMyAdmin panel.

You may have several databases. Click the one that holds your WordPress data, the database you created when you installed WordPress.

This shows only default tables. You may have more tables — this would happen if you have any statistics plugins or anti-spam plugins.

1. Select ONLY those that hold your WordPress site.
2. Check the “Add DROP TABLE” box.
3. Check the “Complete inserts” box.
4. Check the “Save as File” box
5. Check the “None” for compression. If your database is very large use a compression method.
6. Click Go. The data will now be saved into your computer.

How to Move WordPress Blog to New Domain or Location

For blogger who self-hosts the WordPress blog publishing system on a web hosting server with own registered domain name, sometimes, you may decide to reorganize the blog link URL to make it tidier or to reflect new focus or theme of the blog. If you decide to change the URL or link location of your WordPress blog due to changing of domain name (such as from http://www.old-domain.com/ to http://www.new-domain.com/) or the blog to another directory location (such as from http://www.domain.com/ to http://www.domain.com/blog/), there are some steps that should be done to ensure the proper migration and no breaking links.

The tricky part when moving WordPress blog to another location is that WordPress is using absolute path in URL link instead of relative path in URL link location when stores some parameters in database. Within blog posts’ contents itself, users may also use the old URLs when creating reference backlinks. All these values in the database will need to be changed when WordPress is moved. The following guide will show you which database fields that has references or values related to blog’s URLs that you want to modify. Note that this guide is not about how to move WordPress blog from one server or host to another new hosting service.

Once the blog has been moved (all files copy over in case of moving location or server or new domain name properly propagated across Internet for new domain name), the first thing to change is to tell WordPress the new blog location (wp-config.php should be no changes, and .htaccess file should be also no changes. If for some reason mod_rewrite rules for friendly URLs no longer works, you can always regenerate the .htaccess file via WP Administration’s Update Permalinks page). This value can be changed via WordPress Options page, but if you no longer able to access to old blog URL, you have to modify the value via MySQL database.

Note: The guide uses SQL statements based on MySQL replace() function to modify the database. To run SQL queries, login to MySQL database that houses WordPress tables via phpMyAdmin or login to the DB server and run MySQL client as root.

To update WordPress options with the new blog location, use the following SQL command:

UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = replace(option_value, 'http://www.old-domain.com', 'http://www.new-domain.com') WHERE option_name = 'home' OR option_name = 'siteurl';

After that you will need to fix URLs of the WordPress posts and pages, which translated from post slug, and stored in database wp_posts table as guid field. The URL values in this field are stored as absolute URLs instead of relative URLs, so it needs to be changed with the following SQL query:

UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = replace(guid, 'http://www.old-domain.com','http://www.new-domain.com');

If you have linked internally within blog posts or pages with absolute URLs, these links will point to wrong locations after you move the blog location. Use the following SQL commands to fix all internal links to own blog in all WordPress posts and pages:

UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = replace(post_content, 'http://www.old-domain.com', 'http://www.new-domain.com');

Browse through WordPress blog to check if everything is okay. You also need to re-login to WP Administration as authentication cookie has now became invalid due to different domain.

Second, we’re happy to announce that video units now support 728×90 and 160×600 formats to more easily fit into your site. These two new formats will feature five video thumbnails – when a user clicks on one of the thumbnails, a full sized video unit will appear, along with accompanying ads:

Finally, if you haven’t edited or made a new video unit recently, you may not have noticed that you can now preview the kinds of video that will show up in the unit, based on the filtering choices you’ve made. We heard that you wanted more insight into the types of content that would display, and we think this will help.

While you can use video units like any other ad, they’re also a great addition to the content of your page. So we encourage you to use video units as you may have used embedded YouTube videos in the past – to add variety and interest for your users.

As you may know, you can set up your custom channels so that they’re targetable by advertisers – these targetable custom channels are known as ad placements. By selecting the ‘Allow advertisers to target this channel’ checkbox on the channel creation page, you can enable brand advertisers to target their content to your audience directly on a CPM or CPC basis.

Creating ad placements allows them to show up in AdWords, so that advertisers who create placement-targeted campaigns can include your content directly. What many publishers don’t know is that this also makes your content available to Google’s internal sales teams, who work closely with many advertisers looking to target a certain audience or type of content. With this in mind, we thought it would be important to mention a few best practices which will help advertisers and our internal sales teams target your content to help you maximize revenue:

First, take time to make sure your channel names and descriptions accurately describe your content and audience. By including descriptions that closely reflect your content, you’ll also attract advertisers from those areas. Naming and descriptions are important.

On that note, our second tip: be very careful about changing the name of an ad placement. If an advertiser has already targeted one of your specific channels, the channel will become unavailable to the advertiser once you change its name. If you wish to rename a channel, we recommend creating a second channel with the new name, and then attaching both channels to your ad unit. Remember, you can attach up to five custom channels to an ad unit.

Third, use the 300×250 medium rectangle, opted in to both text and image ads. This is one type of targetable ad unit that’s in high demand by Google’s CPM advertisers. We recommend placing these units in line with your content, and describing them as they relate to the content. This combination of format and placement enables advertisers to use image, text, or rich media (including gadget ads) effectively. In feeds, we recommend opting in to both image and text in all ad units, as many of these advertisers only target with image ads into feeds.

Finally, as always, the most important tip for maximizing revenue from your ad placements is to create quality content that is visually appealing and attracts a quality audience. Many brand advertisers look at all placements before placing an advertising order to make sure the destination sites are in line with their brand and attract the type of audience they wish to target for a particular campaign.

Een WordPress Site draait onder Apache in combinatie met MySQL en PHP…klinkt dit nu al te moelijk ga dan naar: USBWebserver.nl voor een kant en klare (10MB) versie van Apache, MySQL, PHP en SMTP Server als stand-alone applicatie voor gebruik op PC en zelfs op USB Stick. Een kind kan de was doen. Voor degene die niet zelf willen hosten kan WordPress of Joomla ook gehost worden bij een provider…. geen idee welke provider? Zoals je wellicht is opgevallen wordt de Blog van Vinnie steeds drukker en staan her en der advertenties. Door op een (of heel veel) van deze advertenties te klikken wordt er uiteindelijk als dank een vergoeding voor betaald. AdSense is het advertentienetwerk van Google. Het verzorgt de advertenties op vele website over het hele internet. De advertenties – zoals je ze ook op deze site kan zien – worden automatisch aangepast op de inhoud van de pagina, hierdoor weet je in ieder geval zeker dat de advertenties relevant (en dus niet storend) zijn!

Wat kun je ermee?

Geld verdienen! Voor iedere klik op een advertentie krijg je als webmaster een klein bedrag. En dat kan een best leuke verdienste worden als je maar genoeg relevante bezoekers op je site hebt.

Hoe werkt het?

Na het aanmelden van je account gaat Google bekijken of je site voldoet aan hun eisen. Dit komt er in de praktijk op neer dat er wordt bekeken of je website geen illegale of onzedelijke zaken bevat. Daarnaast dient je website niet meer (zichtbaar) in ontwikkeling zijn.

Als je website is goedgekeurd krijg je hiervan bericht en kan je inloggen op de AdSense pagina. Daar ga je naar het tabblad AdSense Instellingen en kies je wat je op je site wilt zetten:

• AdSense voor inhoud
• AdSense voor zoeken
• Verwijzingen

De ‘gewone’ AdSense advertenties vallen onder de eerste optie, daarom kiezen we daar op dit moment voor. In het volgende scherm kies je het Advertentieblok en klik je weer op doorgaan. Je komt dan in het volgende scherm terecht, waar je kan kiezen tussen de verschillende advertentieformaten. Ook kun je de kleuren van de advertentie aanpassen aan je eigen layout en zelfs enkele alternatieven instellen voor de momenten dat er geen advertenties beschikbaar zijn. Als dit allemaal is ingesteld klik je nogmaals op doorgaan en dan laat AdSense zien welke code je moet gebruiken. Welke code je nodig hebt, hangt dus af van het type advertentie, de kleuren en de afmetingen. Nu is het nog enkel een kwestie van het invoegen van de Javascript-code in je HTML, daarna staan de advertenties op je site!
